LYRICS

I’ve lost a lot of weekends
In many different ways
(Holding on for sunny days)
Staying close to my best friends
The only way to stay
(Holding on for sunny days)

Wake up in the morning
Finish up my yawning
Stumble into coffee head
Read up on the latest
News, I still hate it Stumble back into my bed

A morning rollick with a pixel queen
Beamed into heed shady alleys unclean
But it’s not the kind of love that I’m looking for
So I stumble into shoes and out the front door
A park bench bellows a mechanical drone
The familiar reminder that I’m not alone
But it’s not the kind of love that I’m looking for
Set myself to slumber, looking for more

This ain’t rebellion,
This is Sportswear Punk.
This ain’t rebellion,
This is Sportswear Punk.

I’ve lost a lot of weekends
In many different ways
(Holding on for sunny days)
Staying close to my best friends
The only way to stay
(Holding on for sunny days)

A photo on my social gets past my immunity
That hungered urge, that need for community
So I’ll dress up nice and I’ll take a photo
A snapshot of time, freeze still emotion
Because I think I am, what I say I am
Because I think I am, what I say I am
Because I think I am, what I say I am
but I’ve got no-one to talk to.

This ain’t rebellion,
This is Sportswear Punk.
This ain’t rebellion,
This is Sportswear Punk.

Do we even like it?
Do we know our name?
Do we even want it?
Will it always be the same?

But I live for that feeling
That feeling that I’m dreaming
This earthquake is a-seeping
The whole world goes all sleepy…

I’ve lost a lot of weekends
In many different ways
I’m holding on to sunny days

I’ve lost a lot of weekends
In many different ways
(Holding on for sunny days)
Staying close to my best friends
The only way to stay
(Holding on for sunny days)

But I live for that feeling
That feeling that I’m dreaming…

NOTES

There’s never been a better time to be alone than the present. The entire world is open to you through the internet, you can view beautiful things from older happier days, hear songs sung from more vibrant times, and feel things that you cannot find outside the theatre of your bedroom. The golden age for the introvert.

Because of this, the late-millennial seem to spend a lot of time in their own heads, thinking about who and what they are, and acting upon what they find. Sharing things that represent how you feel or how you wish to be identified has become almost second nature.

But this isolation and inward obsession seems to have fucked us up a little bit: anxiety, lack of self-belief, difficulty finding like-minded people who share all your intricate opinions and beliefs. Loneliness, confusion at the point of it all, & despair at how you will find your place in the adult world that was built by generations with totally different ideas & values from your own.

In these times of absolute solitude, suddenly those that are closest to us become of maximum importance, the friends we hold dearest, whose company lets us escape from such feelings.

This contradiction is one of many that defines our generation, the ever-revolving cycle of bliss & anxiety, passing from moment. This song was built on this, using chords that change between major (happy) & minor (sad) keys, always looking for the resolution which never quite comes.

This is at the core of the whole concept of Sportswear Punk. We feel different, we act different, and we want to be different, but we can’t seem to muster any sort of actual rebellion against the world that we feel so alarmingly alien from. We find our own ways to cope; through art, through music, through films, through creative expression, through drugs, through friends, through love, through fashion, through hedonism.
This isn’t rebellion. This is Sportswear Punk.
